Think Twice Before Gifting a Kitten This Christmas

Think Twice Before Gifting a Kitten This Christmas

The festive season approaches fast, and you may be thinking of surprising a loved one with a little furry friend. The creators of Cat Angels Triumph, a free educational game about responsible cat care, ask you to think carefully before gifting a kitten this Christmas.

It’s a joy to bring cats into your life, but it’s also a big decision. And should never be made on someone else’s behalf.

“A kitten may be a cute addition to the family, but it’s not just a gift—it’s a living being that needs care, attention, and love every day,” says Dr. Elsa Flint, veterinary advisor for Cat Angels Triumph. “Before you consider bringing a kitten into your home, we hope people take a while to think about their ability to provide for their needs long-term.”

Is The Recipient Ready for a Kitten?

Before you gift, think carefully:

  • Have you talked to the recipient about the long-term responsibility for a pet?

  • Are they prepared for the ongoing costs of pet care - vet visits, food, and more?

  • Do they have a support system in place for unexpected challenges and absences?

  • Do they want the responsibility of taking care of a cat for the life of that animal, about 13 years?

Anne Batley Burton, founder of The New Zealand Cat Foundation explains: “Cats bring immense joy and companionship, but the reality is that gifting pets, especially around the holidays, without ensuring the gift is welcome can lead to overcrowded shelters. In 2022, over 100,000 kittens were surrendered to shelters across New Zealand which points out the need for more thoughtful consideration.”

This Christmas, give knowledge that saves cats' lives.

If you’re keen to make a difference this Christmas, why not support the creation of a vital new story for the Cat Angels Triumph game? We want to teach people how they can spot early signs and get treatment for Pyometra, a life-threatening uterine infection that can strike unspayed female cats. It's dangerous but at the same time preventable. Early detection and action are critical to save a cat's life. Still, only 50% of cats worldwide receive regular veterinary check-ups! This means that conditions like pyometra often go undiagnosed until it’s too late.

For this story, aptly called "Whisker Woes" (working title), the team needs your help. To complete it, we need to raise $25,000, which will cover animation, scripting, a review by our advisers and vets and implementation costs. With your support, we can finish this important storyline and create a lasting impact on cats’ health and happiness.
